This year, I am particularly honoured to have flown the first ever Inclusive Pride Flag at the CAF Health Services Centre Edmonton – a place where everyone should feel safe and welcome in accessing health care. With this support, I am prouder than ever to be serving within the Canadian Armed Forces as an openly gay man. This progress has empowered me to stand strong and use my voice to speak truth to power. However, this organization has also experienced a culture change and has implemented strong policies to protect members of the LGBTQ2+ community. While there continues to be much work to be done, this progress has led to significant changes within society.Īt the beginning of my career, I felt as if I could not be my true self.
Over the past few decades, there have been tremendous efforts in ensuring that the rights of this community are protected and respected. On May 17, many people around the globe are coming together to recognize the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia by raising awareness to eliminate prejudice, violence and judgment faced by LGBTQ2+ people.
